Bio

Marcella Gemelli, PhD is a sociologist interested in how people make sense of their lives. Her work focuses on how identity, culture, social expectations, and access to resources shape that process, in the everyday and pivotal moments of change. Recently, she’s been drawn to the gap between how aging is talked about and how it is actually lived, especially for women navigating it in real time, as she is now.

Sociology investigates people and behaviors. It asks, why do we do the things we do? Marcella likes getting into the weeds. She approaches questions in a process-oriented way, drawing connections across different sources, perspectives, and experiences. She values better understanding what shapes people’s motivations, decisions, and sense of self as members of their communities. View her publications and presentations.

Marcella’s approach also extends to organizational and collaborative settings, informing conversations about learning, culture, and how people work together. She welcomes opportunities to lead groups and workshops. She started writing for women on her blog because she believes it is important stories get told, that experiences are shared.

Marcella Gemelli, PhD is a Teaching Professor of Sociology at the T. Denny Sanford School of Social and Family Dynamics at Arizona State University. Marcella makes complex concepts clear, relevant, and usable with ideas that connect personal experience with broader social patterns. She especially loves working closely with students on capstone and deep-dive projects, helping them find their own way through the work.
